Wedding DJs vs Club DJs – What’s the difference?

February 17th, 2015

I have great appreciation for Club DJs; they’re truly masters of their craft. They have learned how to beat match, scratch, cut-in, and many other skills associated with DJing. They experiment with new effects every time they’re going to perform at a club. Most likely, you already have great admiration for a particular DJ, because they have made you dance, have fun, and forget any stress you had before you went to see their performance.

At this performance, a Club DJ most likely played songs that are very popular on the radio, songs that in the music industry are called Top 40. These days, Top 40 songs encompass different genres, such as Techno, Hip-Hop or R&B. A lot of these genres have content that may be considered risqué due to its lyrical content. To edit swear words out on these songs is not a priority for a Club DJ.

Your favorite Club DJ most likely has an affinity to a particular genre of music. It could be Techno, Dubstep or Rap. They develop and practice their favorite genre and experiment with different songs from the same genre when they perform.

Wedding DJs, while sharing some abilities and talents that Club DJs have, are a completely different entity.

Wedding DJs will have a vast knowledge of different genres of music. Country, Rock ’n’ Roll, Oldies, R&B, Line Dances, Techno and everything in between. They understand your guests will not only be your friends (who will most likely have a similar liking to your style of music), but will also be Aunt Judy (who loves to do the Twist), Cousin Tony (who likes to dance to Disco Music) and little nephew Connor (who loves to rock out to the latest Katy Perry song). Wedding DJs know all your family and friends have joined you in your wedding and are ready to have fun and dance!

Club DJs, with the exception of announcing the drink specials or “last calls” of the night, usually don’t make any announcements. A Wedding DJ is also a Master Of Ceremonies (MC) and knows all the formalities that weddings might entail. They know a wedding follows a structure of succession of events, and also a timeline, that serves as a guide for when to announce these events. They also know to communicate with other wedding professionals during the event to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Wedding DJs understand to have curse words in any song would be disrespectful to play at any wedding. They make sure they have radio-edited songs and play them at the appropriate time.

For a Club DJ, every gig on a Friday or Saturday night is just another opportunity to make everyone dance to the hottest tracks. A Wedding DJ knows a wedding is a special event (we don’t call them gigs) to celebrate the union of two people. A Wedding DJ knows and understands this special event is also the most important day of their lives.

Club DJs are usually working to improve their skills, get their name out, and some of them even want to become celebrities. Wedding DJs, in the other hand, want their clients to be the celebrity. They understand this is their day and they should be the focus of attention for everyone.

This article is not intended to discredit Club DJs. As I mentioned in the beginning, I truly admire and appreciate them. They develop and explore new beats and rhythms in music. They might even become the newest celebrity DJ. But do they have the experience or knowledge to oversee the success of your wedding?

At Bridal Affairs we have professionals that have worked over +200 weddings (and counting). We strive for excellence in every single one of our events. Make sure to evaluate all of your options before you hire any professional for the most important day of your life.
